beautiful compo, though i think you could crop off some of the top and the bottom.
it's a little blurry too.. maybe a light unsharp mask?

Yay! You posted again. I have had my breath held all this time Brian. This certainly is a beautiful scene and masterfully composed. Everything seems fuzzy to me ... maybe camera shake? Maybe you were busy eating a banana and took this one-handed? I dunno. Very nice though Brian.

Hugs,

*falls over in shock* A NEW PHOTO??????

A very scenic shot. I like the composition as is, wound not crop this at all. I agree a slight sharpening might be called for but it is really not needed to make this a very good photo.

Now I have to wait another year or two for your next photo. :(

It's about damn time, 11 months later... :p (Guess that dart finally found it's mark)

I don't have a direct link for it, but I'm sure eowyn does...the Robert Mekis sharpening technique...it's an ancient form of kung fu from the Robert Mekis dojo. Known to be able to sharpen any photo that crossed it's path.

IMAGE UPDATED !!!!!!!!!

Remus was kind enough to do some tweaking to the image with regard to its sharpness. I have this image on my wall at home as a 20 x 16.. it has been scanned and I tried (for the First time) to bring it into Photoshop....... lol

Anyway, Remus/Zanzibar has helped out and its appreciated, This place was posted by Remus a while back, hence my posting.............

Cheers for taking the time to post... its appreciated.

Beautiful scene A-H, tho gotta agree with Michelle, it looks just a smidgeon fuzzy. We've toldya before, put-the-bananas-down-before-you-click! :p

Seriously though, it's a good, well balanced composition Brian. I particularly like the splash of colour from the boat moored to the right (starrrrrrrboard soyde) - which completes the mood very, very nicely.

Well done!

Good to see you got the photograph sorted out. Sorry buddie, I totally forgotten about the beatluck.com site altogether. I didn't realise your photograph was on it. Anyhow, you managed to get it all sorted out which is cool.

With you permission I'd like to use your two photographs as part of my research for the photography class project.

I think I'll have to check this at home, as on my office monitor it doesn't look good.

I'm sure the original hanging on your wall looks great, but this image is blurred, and has a thin white strip down the right hand side.

Avatar kittyKat

 11/08/05 @594

No offence monkey boy but now I think the edit made the greens look too florescent green
I liked it how it was
after reading what everyone was saying it looked fuzzy I took it and tried sharpening it my self.
I don't think thats the answer I think if anything it needed to be lightened a tad. not sharpened
besides I like a photo UNTOUCHED I like to see what the photographer took with out any edits...
just my personal opinion and flava
no offence Remus

Avatar Byonder

 11/08/05 @852

I'm viewing this on a high-def, color-calibrated widescreen monitor at school and it's really blurry/muddy. Appears to be the jpg compression, because out-of-focus pictures don't have the same type of blur.

Avatar Almost-Human

 11/08/05 @865

explain, more... I am not a digital photographer,
The origional is a 35mm c41 colour neg..........
printed to 20 x 16 sitting on the wall..
its not amazingly sharp on close inspection but in saying that its not noticable from 2 ft... lol what I am saying is you get away with it...
Now it was scanned from the print in the frame.. taken out of the frame first.. (indeed)

after that I am a bit lost.... scanned at high resulution 4800 I think into a jpeg...

So byonder what should I be doing?

I am also viewing it on a hi res widescreen at home.. (must get it calibrated) joke

Avatar Almost-Human

double post !
might as well use it !

I AM SHIT AT THIS PHOTOGRAPHY !

Avatar emarts

 11/08/05 @871

Is the print sitting flat on the glass of the scanner? Scan it in at a much higher resolution then ruduce the size in incements, each time applying a little sharpening, until you get to 716pixels wide. This might help.

Oh yeah, save it as an uncompressed TIF file until you are done. Then save the final step as a jpg with a high setting like 9 or better.

Avatar Almost-Human

 11/08/05 @880

ok first things first... I cant rescan it.. have reframed the origional and the image I have is the one I have, if you get my meaning. I also dont have a big scanner.... only A4..

So If we assume I am using the file I have you are saying keep making it smaller and sharpen it each time??? and the file format thing.. I get that...

You didnt vote man... how am I supposed to feed my twelve red haired irish kids? or are you waiting until I sort the image out before voting?? ;)

Avatar danheacock

 11/08/05 @892

Oh Ireland, the place I want to go more than anything! Other than what some other people have said, personally I would have tried to get closer if I could to the boat and have the abbey in the background. Just a thought though!

Avatar Byonder

 11/08/05 @895

In PS you should enlarge/reduce by incriments of 10%. It keeps the clarity of the piece much sharper and cleaner than if you just reduce by, say 60%, or enlarge by 130%. Personally I just created actions for reducing and enlarging, so I don't have to waste time going into "Image/Image Size..." etc.

Avatar BaronImpossible

 11/08/05 @993

I like it. The lack of sky makes it seem more secluded. The boat's a nice touch, although I would've got in there and dragged it closer for better effect (can't be a photographer without getting your feet wet). You're right, though, your sharpening has gone amiss - it looks like it was sharpened on the RGB channels rather than converting to lab and using the brightness channel. Or that's not the case maybe it was sharpened too much. One thing I would've done is roughly mask the foreground, feather the mask (or gaussian blur or whatever your package supports) then boost contrast and saturation within the mask, especially of the yellows, and blue for the boat - this would make the foreground stand out more and create some real depth +8/10

Avatar Basw

 11/08/05 @994

The scenery is very nice though and the composition is very good.

Avatar starqueen

 11/09/05 @096

Hey Brian, thanks for messaging me to come look at this! I think... it's a beautiful shot, but nothing that creative or thought out.I think the color balance between the left and right sides could have been worked out better, even if you have to use photo-editing to do it. The green/bluish colors of the boat are very strong and distracting in comparison to the house/castle. It also looks a bit over-sharpened and has an overall sharpness to it that just kind of... boring, it doesn't allow for a focus. A lack of atmosphere is always something that contributes to that.

I really do like it overall... +9

Avatar Almost-Human

 11/09/05 @105

Its been pushed on the saturation. Mainly as the origional has hung on the wall for over 10 years...

Avatar Abstractor

 11/25/05 @630

Brian, I really like the composition of this work. The boat totaly makes it for me. the contrast between the magesty of the castle and the humble small boat is masterful. My taste would be a little less brightness, and a little stronger contrast. As you've seen in my work i tend that way.....sometimes too much :) great work my friend. Keith

Avatar JordanRoots

 11/26/05 @812

I agree with abstractor,a little less brightness. And maybe you shoul crop the image so we could see the castle bigger.

 11/28/05 @522

THAT is a big event!!! :)

So thats where you live... Over the big three on the right!!!
Amazing...

Nice to see you posted a new artwork... Hope you do that more often!!!

About the picture... I think you could work more on colors in photoshop... To make it more vivid... But that is not your fault... Probably a camera problem... I know that because I have a problem like that... Very nice ideas and a very poor camera!!!

Maybe a framing would help to solve that issue too!!!

But anyway, a wonderful pic from a really good artist that you are!!!

Good subject, good angle, good composition and a really beautiful place!!!

What else can I say.... A big event like that deserves a +10!!

Top marks (10)

Now that I'm looking at this again I'm wondering why you didn’t acquired one of those long wooden boats with the carved dragon-head's in the front (like the Vikings used) and sailed that so it was poking out from behind those bushes on the right, by the castle. Then this picture would have been perfect. But it looks like you just didn't want to go the extra mile...

:p
